How to Really Fish Boats: Steering, Stamina, and On-Water Controls
How boats work in How to Really Fish: PC steering inputs, stamina cost per trip, the GPS and NEXT ISLAND readouts, the recover-boat stuck fix, and when offshore trips pay off.
Boats in How to Really Fish are drivable during a run once you're on Forest Island, and they let you fish away from the starting beach. On PC, you steer the boat with WASD, every trip costs roughly 10–15% of your stamina bar (per community-guide reporting), and a GPS readout tracks your distance back to Forest Island while a NEXT ISLAND marker tracks progression. If the boat gets stuck, use the Recover Boat option to reset its position slightly out to sea.
Getting on the water
Once you are on Forest Island during a run, boats are drivable and let you fish away from the starting beach. While you are out on the water, a GPS readout tracks your distance back to Forest Island — the simplest way to avoid drifting too far from the campfire and Fisherman Joe. There is also a NEXT ISLAND marker in the interface for progressing beyond Forest Island.
Driving a craft yourself during a run is separate from the initial crossing to Forest Island, which different players describe differently — some as a lobby boat-party teleport, others as boarding a raft at the starter-island dock — and which is not player-controlled driving. Check in-game how your current version handles the opening crossing.
PC boat controls
Boat steering is part of the default desktop keyboard scheme:
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| WASD | Steer the boat between islands |
The documented efficiency tip: coast at half-throttle to save stamina. Mobile and console steering inputs for boats are not covered here, so treat the table as PC behavior.
Stamina: the real cost of sailing
Driving the boat consumes your stamina bar. Community-guide values put every boat trip at roughly 10–15 percent of your stamina, and running out at sea forces a slow drift back to the dock. Stamina recharges by simply standing on deck for a few seconds, so efficient players batch their trips — load up on lures, travel out, and return only when the inventory is full. A practical reserve rule from the same guides: always leave the island with at least 30 percent stamina in reserve, which lets you chase a rare fish on the way back without risking a stranded state.
Stuck boat? Recover Boat
If the boat gets stuck during a run, press Recover Boat; the boat's position will then be reset slightly out to sea, freeing it. This fix has been demonstrated in player walkthroughs rather than documented in any official material, but it's the known remedy.
When an offshore trip is worth it
Sailing immediately is not necessarily the fastest way to build early cash. Cooking and selling both happen back on Forest Island, so travelling far only becomes useful when you have enough catches to justify returning with a larger haul. For the opening clam objective and your first few Carps, staying on the shoreline is faster than sailing anywhere. Once you do sail, batch the trip: fill your inventory before heading back, since the GPS readout keeps your return distance to Forest Island visible the whole time.
Once you can handle the boat, the next step is the offshore fishing interaction itself — the catch inputs work the same whether you're on the shoreline or out at sea.
