How to Really Fish: Forest Island Landmarks and Orientation

Locate Forest Island's key spots in How to Really Fish: the beach, campfire, Fisherman Joe, the Giant Crab encounter, shoreline fishing, and how to sail back or onward.

Forest Island is the early hub island in How to Really Fish, and the most useful orientation cue is the location label itself: when it reads "Forest Island" and a money objective appears telling you to find 3 clams and sell them to the Fisherman, you have landed where you need to be. The island's landmarks — beach, campfire, Fisherman Joe, shoreline fishing spots, and the Giant Crab encounter — each have a function, and the early money loop runs through them.

Arriving on the island

Every run begins in the lobby:

  1. Step onto the yellow platform to join a boat party.
  2. Wait until the party fills (a reviewed lobby image showed both 4/4 and 2/2 parties with countdowns, so a four-player count is not a universal requirement).
  3. Let the STARTING IN countdown finish — a red Leave button is available beforehand.
  4. When the screen reads TELEPORTING, the whole party drops at Forest Island.

Arrival is confirmed by the "Forest Island" location label plus the opening money objective.

Landmark index

Forest Island's landmarks are each defined by a function, and the early money loop concentrates around three of them:

  • The beach — where clams are collected for the opening objective.
  • The campfire — where catches are cooked to raise sale value. Dropping a clam or fish onto it triggers a confirmation message such as "Cooked the Clam! Now worth $2...".
  • Fisherman Joe — both buyer and shopkeeper in one interaction: sell cooked items and buy upgrades (e.g., Sharpen Knife at $15) without leaving the beach area.
  • The Giant Crab — a shared boss encounter that can happen anywhere on the island (details below).

Before leaving the beach, locate where you will return to sell — the beach, campfire, and Fisherman Joe form the loop you will repeat constantly.

Shoreline pickups

The shoreline and beach feed the cook-and-sell loop with collectible items. Recorded examples (not a guaranteed price list or spawn guarantee):

ItemWhereNote
ClamPicked up on the Forest Island beachCooked value listed at $2 in one observed session
LeechCollected on the islandCooked and sold

Cooked values are not fixed every time — two Carps sold in the same run landed at $11 and $8 — so treat recorded numbers as a range, check the amount displayed for your own catch, and confirm a cooking notification appeared. A missing cooking message means the item was not registered as cooked; check the item and current prompts.

Shoreline fishing

With the Fishing Rod equipped, fishing takes two actions: cast the line, then reel in when a fish bites. The starting bait is the Basic Lure, with a Change Bait option alongside the cast control; once hooked, the interface swaps to the reel prompt plus a Drop Fish option. Carp is the most common early catch, with Emo Fish and Bream appearing as you keep casting from the shoreline.

Each catch follows the same loop: reel it in, walk it to the campfire, take the cooked version to Fisherman Joe. For the opening objective and first catches, staying near the shoreline is faster than sailing anywhere, since cooking and selling both happen back on the island. Fish near a cooking station for fast money; quieter, more distant shorelines are community-reported to hold higher-value fish.

The Giant Crab encounter

The Giant Crab is a shared boss encounter, not a private one. Any player who wakes it broadcasts to the whole server with a message naming them (e.g., "STANDOFF27967 has woken the Giant Crab!") and a GIANT CRAB health bar appears for everyone. Players attack it with knives together; partway through the fight, the game warns "The Giant Crab is enraged!", signalling a changed state rather than a fixed percentage threshold.

A Crab Claw has appeared on the ground after defeat, but one observed drop does not prove a permanent drop rate, fixed quantity, sale price, or group-wide ownership — check your own UI after a kill. For the fight itself, rely on the live health bar and in-session prompts rather than fixed health or safe-zone claims.

Leaving the island

Boats are drivable and let you fish away from the starting beach. While driving, a GPS readout shows your distance back to Forest Island — the simplest way to avoid drifting too far from the campfire and Fisherman Joe — and a NEXT ISLAND marker indicates progression beyond Forest Island. Long boat trips only pay off when hauling several catches at once, since cooking and selling happen back on the island. A next-island marker is not proof that all prerequisites are complete.
