How to Really Fish Lures: Reported Lures and How to See Your Active Bait
The Basic Lure starting bait, the Change Bait interface, and source-reported named lures tied to specific catches — a scoped reference, not a priced lure catalogue.
The one lure consistently documented in gameplay reports is the Basic Lure, the starting bait included with the Fishing Rod. On the inspected PC interface, the Fishing Rod sits in the bottom hotbar, the bait label reads "Basic Lure", and B is assigned to the Change Bait action — when your interface shows the same prompt, use B for that action. A Change Bait option also sits alongside the cast control and is used if you obtain another bait type.
Reading the current lure label is how you identify which lure is selected. The interface confirms your lure choice, but it does not display the full bait catalogue, unlock requirements, or a stat table. No verified price, effect, or catch-rate number is available for the Basic Lure. Carp is reported as the most common early catch made with the Basic Lure (cooked values of $8 to $11 were observed), though even a named-lure-to-catch link like this does not imply a fixed multiplier.
Named lures reported in playthroughs and their catch associations
Beyond the Basic Lure, full-game playthrough reports name several lures and tie each to a specific catch or encounter. These are source-reported observations from beta playthroughs, not a verified catalogue — no prices, tiers, or effect numbers below are independently confirmed, and the game may have changed since the reports. Some baits listed here (Crab Bait, Leech Bait, Carrots, Bucket of Fish) are obtained from NPC exchanges rather than observed shop purchases.
| Reported lure/bait | Reported association | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Lure | Starting bait; early catches such as Carp | Interface observation |
| Crab Bait | Used to fish up the Giant Crab on Island 1 | Walkthrough report |
| Leech Bait | Received from Fisherman Joe after collecting three leeches; used to pull the Piranha King on Island 2 | Walkthrough report |
| Standard Lure | Bought via Fisherman Alex on Island 3; needed to reliably pull a Boxfish | Walkthrough and video report |
| Professional Boss Lure (Professional Lure) | Bought on Island 4; used to catch and kill the Giant Tuna; also reported for expensive catches such as Hammerhead Sharks on Volcano Island | Walkthrough and video report |
| Scientific Lure | Described as very expensive; used to catch the five Lava Fish requested by Fisherman Pat | Walkthrough and video report |
| Bucket of Fish | Obtained from Fisherman Pat after trading five Lava Fish; used to catch the Whale | Walkthrough report |
What is and isn't established
Before you plan around this list, keep a few boundaries in mind:
- Crab Claw is not a lure. Community wiki pages sometimes describe it as a purchasable advanced lure, but walkthrough documentation is more specific: it is the Giant Crab boss drop. Treat it as a catch, not a bait.
- Community lure rosters and prices currently conflict with each other. Third-party guides list overlapping but non-matching lures and prices (River Lure, Deep-Sea Lure, Pearl Jig, Phantom Minnow, Glow Minnow, and tier families), which suggests invented or unstable entries. Check the in-game shop or vendor for current prices rather than trusting any listed figure.
- Keybindings are inconsistently reported. Reports conflict on whether keys 1–4 swap lures or whether B handles Change Bait. Match your input to whatever prompt your interface displays when the rod is equipped.
- Effects cannot be inferred from a lure's name. Current gameplay confirms which lure is selected, but no stat table of effects or catch-rate multipliers is displayed.
- Community tier labels (S/A/B/C or Common/Advanced/Expert) are community-reported rankings that shift with the game's weekly balance updates; they are not game-verified.
Because the game updates weekly, recheck the lure roster, the Change Bait prompt, and any displayed prices against the live game before spending on a lure. To use whichever lure you select, follow the fishing controls, and once you've made a catch, the fish catalogue organizes what each lure has been reported to pull up.
