How to Really Fish Objectives Checklist: Documented Fisherman Tasks

Match your on-screen How to Really Fish objective to a documented task: the opening clam goal, each island fisherman's stated requirement, reward, and completion message.

On Forest Island, the opening objective asks you to find three clams and sell them to the Fisherman. Clams are available around the Forest Island beach. Every run begins in the lobby: step onto the yellow platform to join a boat party, watch its current counter, let the STARTING IN countdown finish, and you are teleported to Forest Island. Countdown screens have been observed with both 4/4 and 2/2 parties, so do not assume one fixed party size. The same collect-cook-sell mechanic that completes this first task establishes the game's money loop, and the tutorial prompts are also the fastest opening income — keep catches flowing until the party hits $20.

Beyond that opening task, this page is a lookup checklist of the fisherman objectives reported from play of the game. Find the task currently on your screen, read its stated requirement, and use the matching detail below. Exact on-screen prompt wording is only partially transcribed and task requirements come from player narration rather than quoted UI text, so treat the wording in the table as paraphrased and check the exact prompt in-game. There is no verified total objective count, so this is not a complete list of every task in the game.

Island fisherman objectives

Each island's fisherman hands out one task with a stated requirement and a hand-in reward. The chain below reflects how the run plays out, with fisherman names and items as recorded:

For the leech task, leeches that are far away are marked with white dots on your screen — follow those rather than searching the shoreline manually.

One naming conflict to be aware of: Fisherman Joe is placed on Island 2 in this chain, but other in-game content treats Fisherman Joe as the Forest Island NPC who buys catches and sells the Sharpen Knife upgrade. This is currently inconsistent between parts of the game's presentation, so check the NPC in front of you before assuming which task applies.

End-of-run objectives on Volcano Island

The final objective chain, as recorded in a complete run:

  1. Talk to Fisherman Pat on Volcano Island; he asks for five scientific fish, which require the expensive Scientific Lure.
  2. Give the scientific fish to Pat one by one; the hand-in reward is a Bucket of Fish, used to catch the final boss, the Whale.
  3. Catch and defeat the Whale, then carry the Whale Carcass up the volcano and throw it into the middle, where it evolves into the Mutated Whale.
  4. Defeat the Mutated Whale, give the Mutated Whale Carcass to Fisherman Pat, and escape to the military boat.

How you know an objective counted

Objectives tied to boss kills confirm completion with on-screen kill lines naming the drop, such as "GIANT CRAB SLAIN! It dropped a Crab Claw!" and "MUTATED WHALE SLAIN! It dropped a Mutated Whale Carcass!". If the line does not appear, the drop is not in your inventory and the fisherman will not accept it. The Giant Crab fight also announces its enrage mid-fight with "The Giant Crab is enraged!". A full run is only finished when the "YOU ESCAPED" banner appears confirming the military boat escape.

What this checklist does and does not cover

Boundaries to know before using this reference:

  • The table covers the fisherman tasks for each island; most task requirements are reported from player narration rather than quoted on-screen UI text, and no verified total objective count exists — do not treat the list as every objective in the game.
  • HOW TO MAKE MONEY is the named opening three-clam objective. "How to Make a Friend" is a player search phrase for the Fisherman Fin progression step, not a confirmed on-screen objective title.
  • The island chain plays as strictly linear — no island opens early and no fisherman accepts a drop out of order — but this page presents tasks as a lookup checklist, not as a proven mandatory run order. Prerequisites, rewards, and ordering can change with patches, so confirm against the prompts you see in-game.
