How to Really Fish: Next Island Marker & Boat GPS, Explained
What the NEXT ISLAND marker shows, what the boat GPS actually measures (distance from Forest Island), and how island-to-island transitions are observed to work.
While boating in How to Really Fish, the interface shows a NEXT ISLAND marker: when you drive a boat away from the starting beach, it indicates progression toward the next island. Treat it as a navigation cue, not a confirmation — don't treat the marker as proof that all prerequisites are complete, and follow the fisherman hand-ins on each island to know when the crossing is actually open.
What the boat GPS readout actually measures
When you drive away from the Forest Island beach, a GPS readout appears on screen. Its reference point is Forest Island itself: it tracks your distance back to Forest Island, not your distance remaining to the next island. Read it as a "distance to your selling point" indicator, since cooking and selling both happen back on Forest Island. Practical uses:
- Avoid drifting too far from the campfire and Fisherman Joe, who are both back on the island.
- Keep track of how far out you've sailed before turning around.
Do not substitute this distance-from-Forest-Island reading for distance-to-destination. Exact travel distances or units for the crossing aren't established — check the on-screen readout in-game for what it currently displays.
Distant-target cue: the white dot
Separate from the GPS readout, when an objective target is far away, a white dot appears on screen indicating that distant location — for example, when Fisherman Joe's leech-collection targets are spread out. Treat the white dot as a positional indicator for the current objective, not the same element as the boat GPS.
How island-to-island transitions work
Each transition follows the same pattern: defeat the current island's boss, trade the boss drop to that island's fisherman, and the game directs you to the next island:
- Defeat the Giant Crab, trade it to the fisherman, and go straight to island two.
- On the second island, complete Fisherman Joe's mission (finding three leeches, exchanging them for leech bait), earn cash for a knife, and use the leech bait to fight the piranha boss.
- Give the piranha bone to Fisherman Joe, and you are routed to the third island.
- On island three, complete Fisherman Alex's box fish task, lure and defeat the giant puffer fish boss, then hand in the dropped thorns to receive directions to the fourth island.
- On island four, complete Fisherman Phil's tuna task and the two-boss sequence (giant tuna, then the second boss that drops a feather); handing the feather to Fisherman Phil directs you to the last island, the volcano.
If the boat gets stuck during a crossing, press recover boat — the boat respawns slightly out to sea. Island numbering and the named destinations can differ between game versions, so confirm each hand-in location on your current island rather than assuming a fixed order.
Orientation checklist before heading out
Before leaving the beach toward the next-island marker:
- Find your current objective before choosing a destination.
- Locate where you will return to sell before leaving the beach.
- Use visible location labels (such as the
Forest Islandlocation label) to keep track of your route. - Don't treat a next-island marker as proof that all prerequisites are complete.
Some wiki pages additionally describe boat-tier gates, named later islands, and teleport anchors; these details are not consistently reflected by the marker and hand-in route shown in-game, so verify any gate behavior on your own save before committing to a long crossing.
Timing the trip: when sailing toward the next island pays off
Sailing immediately toward the next island is not the fastest way to build early cash. Cooking and selling both happen back on Forest Island at the campfire and Fisherman Joe, so long boat trips only pay off when you are hauling several catches at once. For the opening clam objective and the first few fish, stay near the shoreline; finish the beach loop first, then take the boat — with the NEXT ISLAND marker and GPS readout in view — for the longer crossing once the basic loop is established.
